Specialty Rulers – We love them!

I have made no secret out of the fact that I hate cutting.  I always want to get right into the sewing of any project.  I remember Home Economics class and the drudgery of cutting out our patterns before making our stylish aprons. Now, I admit that cutting for a quilting project is usually not nearly as tedious as garment sewing, but it’s still not my favorite thing to do.  Consequently, I am always looking for ways to make this necessary step easier.

We all know that precision cutting, precision pressing, and perfect ¼” seams are vital to creating a work of art.  One time, early on in my quilting experience I zipped right through a flannel, rag quilt, thinking I’d eyeball it.  That quilt was for my husband, who would never criticize a gift, but honestly, I’m ashamed for anybody to see it.  Square? I don’t think so!

Then the happy day came when I was introduced to specialty rulers! Wow, what a life changer. My first, favorite was Creative Grids Trapezoid ruler. We happily used this ruler in quilt show demonstrations for several seasons, always selling as many as we could stock.  Our favorite pattern is Braids on Parade from Far Flung Quilts.

With one package of 2 ½” strips, your trapezoid ruler, and the Braids on Parade pattern you can create a lovely quilt for anybody.  It looks slightly modern, but recalls a longtime favorite quilting design.

Another favorite is the Cat’s Cradle specialty ruler from Creative Grids.  We like the features  of this ruler which allow you  to create blocks from 5 ½” to 1 ½” precisely and beautifully.  Cat’s Cradle Table Runner and the Cut Loose Pattern for a delightful Binder Cover are two of our favorite patterns to use with the Cat’s Cradle Specialty Ruler.

Do you “fussy cut”? If so, you will love the Square it Up Fussy Cut Ruler!  Available in 3 sizes, this specialty ruler will give you the precision you need to square up your quilt blocks and will make you the best fussy cutter around!

Square It Up & Fussy Cut Ruler The Square It Up & Fussy Cut Ruler is a dual purpose tool available in 6 ½", 8 ½", 9 ½", 12 ½", 14½" and 16½" sizes. Use the vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines to square up any pieced, appliquéd or embroidered block. To fussy cut, center a design in the solid squares – printed in 1" increments. The drilled holes at the ½" markings between the squares let you mark and add the seam allowance to your fussy cut piece.

When I first saw the Stripology Ruler by Creative Grids, I thought it was a luxury item.  I mean, I can buy pre-cut strips anywhere, anytime. Right? On further reflection, I compared the cost of pre-cut strips to regular yardage.  Big difference! Plus, I have yardage in my stash, that is beautiful and with this ruler, I can precisely cut my own strips.  How many times have you liked some of the strips in a pack, but not all. Control your colors by cutting your own strips. Sometimes we may need to add a neutral or contrasting color to a project.  To cut strips quickly and accurately, nothing beats the Stripology Ruler.
